Biography

Sofia Avramidou is a Greek composer and singer born in Thessaloniki in 1988. She studied piano, counterpoint, harmony and traditional Greek music at the Thessaloniki Conservatory, then musicology and composition at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2009–2014) and the National Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome (2014–2016), where she graduated with highest distinction in the class of Ivan Fedele and received an Onassis Foundation scholarship. In 2020, she completed the composition and computer music programme at IRCAM in Paris.

She has received numerous awards, including the Goffredo Petrassi Prize at the Quirinal Palace in Rome, First Prize at the IX Francisco Escudero International Accordion Composition Competition, and First Prize at the 6th Dimitris Dragatakis Composition Competition. She has studied with composers such as Beat Furrer, Philippe Manoury, Georges Aperghis and Francesco Filidei.

Her works have been commissioned by major institutions including the Orchestre National de France, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Philharmonie de Paris, IRCAM, the Venice Biennale and Radio France, and performed in prestigious venues worldwide: the Philharmonie de Paris, Musikverein in Vienna, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Barbican Centre in London, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and the Megaron in Athens.

Drawing inspiration from literature, myths and fairy tales, she also pursues Byzantine music, traditional Greek singing, the oud and the ney. As a singer, she has collaborated with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and the Thessaloniki Municipal Orchestra, among others. She is currently Composer-in-Residence at the Opéra National de Bordeaux for the 2025–27 seasons. Her works are published by Éditions Lacroch'.
