1905 – 1972
Markos Vamvakaris (1905–1972), known as the "patriarch of rebetiko," was born in Ano Syros on the island of Syros — the very island that hosts this festival. At twelve, he left for Piraeus, where he taught himself the bouzouki and began composing songs that would define an entire musical genre. His raw, unadorned style captured the struggles, passions, and resilience of the Greek urban working class.
From his first recording in 1932 to classics like Frangosyriani, Vamvakaris created a body of some 350 songs that laid the foundations of modern Greek popular music. His composing style — minimal orchestration, stripped melodic lines, and searing emotional directness — influenced every subsequent generation of Greek musicians. Today, his legacy is celebrated as one of the most important contributions to Greek cultural heritage.
