1897 – 1966
Gaspar Cassadó (1897–1966) was a Spanish cellist and composer born in Barcelona. A pupil of Pablo Casals, he also studied composition with Maurice Ravel and Manuel de Falla in Paris. Known for his austere, noble playing style, he toured internationally from the 1920s and performed under conductors such as Furtwängler, Beecham, and Weingartner.
As a composer, Cassadó enriched the cello repertoire with works that blend Spanish folk elements with the advanced harmonic language he absorbed from Ravel. His Suite for solo cello, Requiebros, and Cello Concerto in D minor remain staples of the instrument's literature. He taught at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena and at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, influencing generations of cellists.
