1867 – 1916
Enrique Granados (1867–1916) was a Spanish pianist and composer born in Lleida, Catalonia. He studied at the Barcelona Conservatory and later in Paris with Charles de Bériot. Alongside Isaac Albéniz and Manuel de Falla, Granados is one of the founders of the Spanish nationalist school, drawing on the rich popular traditions of the Iberian Peninsula to craft a deeply personal musical language.
His masterwork, the piano suite Goyescas (1911), inspired by the paintings of Goya, stands as a pinnacle of the Spanish piano repertoire. His twelve Spanish Dances for piano, written during the 1890s, remain among the most popular works of Spanish piano music. Granados died tragically in 1916 when his ship was torpedoed in the English Channel as he returned from the New York premiere of his opera.
